Otitis media symptoms in adults and children

Otitis media in adults and children is slightly more common with the advent of warmer months, because due to high humidity develop microorganisms that cause inflammation of the upper respiratory tract and, consequently, secondary infection of the ear. How to take preventive action to stop the nasty inflammation of the middle ear and what are the best methods of treatment, read below.

Otitis media: SYMPTOMS

An ear infection is sometimes quite difficult to detect, especially in babies and young children because they are simply too small to tell us what they suffer from. Inflammation of middle ear in children usually occurs immediately after a cold and it happens that the pain in the ears occurs after 24 h of infection. Male babies that are breastfed and suffer pain, indicate the pain by their crying, apathy and refusal of milk is the sign that something is wrong, parents will certainly recognize that. With slightly older children, inflammation of the ear can easily be notice, because children sometimes go a little deaf and do not respond to sounds and often rub their ears. If the child feels pain in the ear, has a blocked nose, sore throat and fever, tears ran-ear and in doing so is upset, irritable and has no appetite - be sure to contact your paediatrician! If such pain and discomfort persist, it can cause hearing loss and other infections. Be sure that if your child is suffering from ear infections more often than 3 times in 6 months, probably it has recurrent otitis media, and then necessarily consultation with a specialist is required.

The most common symptoms of otitis media are fever, anxiety, severe pressure in the ears and insomnia. Acute otitis is accompanied by intense throbbing pain, ringing in the ears, often with impaired hearing. For adults otitis media is treated for at least 10 days and doctors usually prescribe stronger doses of amoxicillin or penicillin injection, in the case of high temperatures is prescribed ibuprofen, or Panadol analgesics and tranquilizers if there are unfavourable and intolerant pains that are considered to be one of the strongest in general. Symptoms soon after application of appropriate treatment withdrawn and the disease slowly passes. Otorhinolaryngology expert will probably recommend to wash the ears to clean the ear canal of accumulated manure. Of course phytotherapy can significantly alleviate the problems which will be discussed later.

The middle ear vertigo

The leading place among the so-called children's diseases occupies otitis media, hearing aid work, which consists of cavities filled with air, and make it oral cavity (Eustachian tube), the eardrum and the mastoid cells. These cavities are lined with mucous membranes which is, in fact, a continuation of mucous membranes in the throat, which is why otitis media in infants and young children are often linked to the sore throat. With adults as well as children there is often imbalance and dizziness which is also one of the symptoms, which can follow the mentioned infection, be sure to mention this to your doctor.

What causes otitis media?

The most common cause of inflammation of the middle ear are viruses that cause upper respiratory tract infection, after which there is a build up of fluid in the Eustachian tube, whose mucous membrane swells, and fluid is trapped in the middle ear and causes inflammation. The consequence of this is painful pressure, which, if not treated, can cause cracking of the eardrum. Bacteria that normally accompanies a viral or allergic reactions quickly finds their way to the hot and humid environment of the middle ear, and most often pneumonia-cocci, which, apart from an ear infection, causes inflammation of the sinuses and lungs. Inflammation of the middle ear is especially present among children in warm summer, when kids often stay at the pools and other swimming areas, where they easily become infected.
Otitis media: TREATMENT

Because otitis media is usually caused by viral infections, treatment consists of softening the symptoms - apply drugs to reduce swelling of the Eustachian tube, antihistamines (allergy medications), and anti-fever and pain drugs (ibuprofen or acetaminophen). The use of antibiotics is indicated when there is suspected or proven presence of bacteria, and the treatment should last for ten days. However, pneumococcal bacteria sometimes creates defensive enzyme that prevents the action of an antibiotics. Therefore, the children of two years who have frequent ear infections are recommended pneumococcal vaccine. It is given in a single dose, without a vaccine, and does not cause adverse reactions.

Otitis media in children can be treated without antibiotics

The results of recent studies show that in the treatment of ear infections it is not always necessary to use antibiotics. In an extensive study in which otitis media followed 320 young patients aged six months to six years, there were some interesting results. Children who had an ear infection were lower in the group that was given the title of "wait and see", and the other group -one of more serious infection immediately underwent treatment. The first group was 76 percent of children who received only pain medication, while the rest of the respondents took antibiotics. After three days kids are reviewed and in 81 percent of children in the first group otitis media disappeared, while in 19 percent there was a necessary antibiotic therapy. In the second group the infections has remained at 63 per cent of children and 37 percent of cases required further treatment. Total four children were undergone surgical intervention. Authors concluded the method gives a "wait and see" was appropriate in more than 60 percent of ear infections and that regular inspections can prevent a variety of complications, thanks to that it can also drastically reduce the use of drugs.

Antibiotics for Ear Infections

An ear infection is the most common reason that children drink antibiotics. Unfortunately, more and more types of bacteria are becoming resistant to this type of drug because it is too often used. Therefore, experts believe that it is necessary to shorten the list of health problems in which the treatment antibiotics. Additional use of antibiotics, especially Hemomycin, has led to the fact that this extremely strong drug no longer works. Therefore, parents are advised not to rush to a doctor. It is necessary to observe the child at least 48 hours and during that time to give him only painkillers. If the condition persists, only then should you see a doctor who will prescribe antibiotics "from the top ranks," that is weaker drug, or in a double dose, because it is known that the resistance of bacteria to antibiotics leads to otitis media in children often returning.

Prevention of otitis with proper nutrition

Otitis media is not at all harmless and every form of its prevention is welcome. For preventing the inflammation nutritionists recommend taking vitamins A, C and zinc, and because of food allergies also play an important role in the case of inflammation of the middle ear, it is necessary to reduce the use of wheat products and spices both in children and adults. Also, the house should be eliminated of pollutants (dust, tobacco) because they contribute to infection. Pain in the ears can be alleviated with fresh juice houseleek, but care should be taken not to use drugs and accessories for instillation into the ear, as in this case there is a risk of counter-effect, which brings new complications, which are certainly not needed.

Besides drops, rinsing the ears, antibiotics, analgesics, antihistamines recommended by official medicine, be sure to ask about natural methods of treatment and medicinal plant medication. As we mentioned earlier, combining with each other, without prior consultation with a qualified person is strictly forbidden and it is possible to do more harm than benefit. Inflammation of middle ear is not a harmless thing, but requires discipline and proper access to treatment. Homeopathy also successfully copes with this problem with many homeopathic medicines and preparations, while acupuncture is known to remove the unbearable pain in the ears.

Houseleek for ear infections

Several leaves of houseleek, cut and squeeze in the ear, but only a few drops of juice. There should not be a lot of liquid in the ear but only enough to stop the pain.
