This medicinal resin contains primarily acids, a group of pentacyclic triterpenes and essential oil.   • Boswellic acids prevent the enzyme (5-lipoxygenase), which plays an important role in the inflammatory process.

  • In rats, the mixture of boswellic acid slowed the growth of brain tumours.
  • In several clinical studies with a total of 260 subjects, in which efficacy of incense in chronic arthritis was studied, the dry extract of frankincense resin achieved very good results compared with placebo and appropriate medications. This is especially true for the application of proportion to the early stages of the disease.
  • Incense as a drug has been used in chronic intestinal inflammation, as with Crohn disease. The clinical studies observed improvements. Compared to the same drug, efficacy of the extract of incense was equally good or even better.
  • Eighty patients who were diagnosed with bronchial asthma, were getting six weeks capsules of incense or placebo. The group that used the Boswellia capsules showed improvement up to 70 percent while the placebo group showed 2 percent.
