How to recognize colon cancer

Colon cancer in is becoming more often in young people

The colon is the part of the digestive tract that is long between 150 and 220 cm. Its main function is the absorption of water from the fecal mass that enters into it from the small intestine, and then the rest of the weight is moved forward, to be dropped through the anus. Colon cancer, the experts call it a colorectal cancer, is one of the most common malignancies. The article will talk about what are the most common causes of the disease, how it manifests the first symptoms and the diagnosis of tumours, what are more modern methods of treatment currently in use, and what nutrition in colon cancer is recommended.

What are the causes of colon cancer?

Colorectal cancer usually includes growths or tumours inside the body, which in most cases arise from polyps. Polyps in the colon should surely be removed, that would later develop into colon cancer when cells begin to divide, forming a tumour. The surrounding tissue may also be affected, and the cancer cells can be separated from the primary tumour and create metastases in other parts of the body. Serious complication is colon cancer with liver metastases. Although medicine has not yet determined the exact cause of this type of cancer, specific risk factors are known. These are, above all, a number of genetic predispositions, and positive family history. The same applies to persons whose family recorded a Crohn's disease or inflammation of the colon.

The risk factors include unhealthy lifestyle, especially physical inactivity, being overweight, smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. People with diabetes are up to 40 percent more likely to have colon cancer than those who do not have diabetes. Women who beat ovarian, uterine or breast cancer are also more exposed to this type of cancer, as well as persons who have already had colorectal cancer (there is a possibility that the cancer will come back, especially if you were first diagnosed before the age of 60).
The first symptoms of colon cancer are occasionally missed

Early symptoms of colon cancer do not usually occur (it may take several years before they are in any way manifested and noticed), which is why people over 50 years of age are recommended regular screening for colon cancer. The so called FOB test reveals the blood in the stool which cannot be seen with naked eye.

The manifestation of specific symptoms, which are often not associated with colon cancer, comes in the later stages of the disease, and they differ depending on the location of the tumour. It can be a frequent diarrhoea, chronic constipation accompanied by imprisonment, blood in the stool, anaemia, a powerful pain or cramps. It can also be a significant weight loss, vomiting, and loss of appetite or feeling of constant fatigue, exhaustion.

A particular problem is the fact that the patients go see the doctor in advanced stages of the disease - when the cure is far more difficult. Cancer can occur in any part of the colon: usually it happens in the rectum (especially in men), and it is possible that malignancy occurs in the middle of the large intestine (mostly women), and at the junction with the small intestine. Persons older than 50 years are most susceptible to this type of cancer, although unfortunately colon cancer is more common in young people.

How to diagnosis colon cancer

Once you gain access to a complete medical history of the patient, the doctor may refer you to a range of specialists. Be sure to do blood tests to determine if there is any inflammation in the body and what is the situation with leukocytes and iron. If you notice the significant decline in the value of iron, your doctor may suspect the bleeding in the intestines.

One of the methods for the detection of this disease is bowel colonoscopy - this is the examination that is implemented using very thin tube (colonoscope) which, thanks to a small device on top gives a detailed interior of the colon. Many people are scared of this examination, but in general there is no reason for it, it only looks and sounds scary, but is usually not painful. It is certainly uneasy, but if you cooperate with a physician specialist - usually a gastroenterologist performing the inspection, there are no problems or pain. The colonoscopy is also a very reliable method for detecting polyps, haemorrhoids, anal fissures, etc.

Sigmoidoscopy, or rectal exam is the second method that can detect colon cancer. During colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy a part of bowel tissue may be taken, which is later sent for laboratory analysis.

Examination with barium contrast is also one of the methods that diagnose colon cancer. It is in fact an X-ray, during which the intestine has a mixture of barium and air. This method may be replaced by a modern CT colonography, which is similar to colonoscopy. If it turns out that the colon has ruptured, then magnetic resonance imaging is recommended, which determines the stage of disease.

Colon cancer prognosis and drug therapy

Colon cancer is completely curable if detected at an early stage and then the tumour is usually removed by surgery. Then the prognosis for cure is very good. However, if the bowel cancer spreads to regional lymph nodes, surgery is not sufficient by itself, but combined with chemotherapy, immunotherapy or radiotherapy. Of course there are certain side effects of this type of treatment.

Operation of the colon leading to short-term pain on the injured spot, skin irritation around the operated area, and there may be a temporary constipation or diarrhoea. Radiotherapy may cause dizziness, change in skin exposed parts of the body, loss of appetite, diarrhoea, nausea, and bleeding from the rectum. On the other hand, immunotherapy causes tremors, weakness, nausea, and can raise body temperature and chemotherapy for colon cancer has the most serious side effects: in addition to nausea, diarrhoea and dizziness, can lead to sores in the mouth and hair loss, and rarely infections and bleeding.

The treatment of colon cancer as noted above primarily depends on the stages of the disease - and in early stages it is completely curable, in the later stages tumour growth may be only partially relieved. Drugs from nature help in every stage as opposed to the official therapy, no side effects, more on them later in this article.

How important is nutrition when it comes to colon cancer

Diet based on foods full of cholesterol and fat increases the risk of colon cancer. You should forget red meat, processed meats and spicy foods large quantities of salt or industrial mixture. White flour, bread and sugar are also not recommended because they are the triggers for colon cancer. It would certainly be beneficial to include wheat bran, legumes, mushrooms fish (it has been shown that fatty fish reduces polyps due to omega-3 fats) and chicken.

It is very important for the body to eat foods rich in fibre and antioxidants, which is particularly applicable to fresh fruits and seasonal vegetables. Particularly beneficial are the vegetables in the crucifer family, eat least three times a week: cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts. Studies have shown that people with higher concentrations of vitamin D in the body are up to seventy percent less likely to develop colon cancer (it is enough to have a cup of skim milk a day to create a protective shield). Diet after surgery of the colon must be strictly supervised by a qualified person.

Apple is one of the most powerful allies in the fight against colon cancer. Chinese experts have singled out the polysaccharides from the fruit, and they are then broken down into oligosaccharides, which are used to treat cancer cells. It turned out that these compounds after 36 hours of operation are almost twice more effective than chemotherapy for colon cancer. Doctors and nutritionists recommend that you eat at least one apple a day to prevent the occurrence of cancer, and it is advisable to incorporate apple vinegar into your diet.

Colon cancer treatment plants and herbs

The beneficial onion against cancer
  • White, red and white onions also are effective in preventing colon cancer, thanks to its anti-inflammatory effects. When cutting or chewing onion, organic-sulfonic substances are released that have an anticancer effect. Garlic clove a day is enough to prevent this vicious disease. On the other hand, onion is rich in quercetin and anthocyanins, a powerful antioxidant that is commonly found in red berries, parsley and oregano, and except preventing cancer it helps with cardiovascular diseases.

Powerful linseed as a prevention
  • Yellow or brown flax seeds are rich in protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and indispensable in vegetable fibre, minerals and vitamins. Regular consumption of this seed encourages cleansing of the colon, eliminates harmful substances that have collected in it. In the treatment of cancer many medicinal herbs help

Liquorice is used in the prevention, and treatment of colon cancer. It slows enzyme activity which block the activity of the compounds which are not only important for the prevention of tumours, but also prevent their growth and development. Studies have shown that the use of liquorice does not cause side effects. Also effective are barn and aloe vera and dandelion.

In fact, recent research shows that the dandelion tea can destroy cells affected by cancer, and that during the destruction it does not infect any healthy cells. In the prevention and treatment of colon cancer black cumin, yarrow, lemon balm, chimneys, sage, mint, horsetail, St. John's wort and marshmallow help, but for colon cancer usually tea mixtures containing up to several mentioned plants is used.
