SCIATICA SYMPTOMS AND TREATMENT

The symptoms of sciatica are nowadays very common and present in a large number of people. As far as the very common illness is concerned, the term has come to pass, although other names such as bone pain, lower back pain etc. Below we will try to give you answers on what are the causative agents, symptoms and, of course, what is sciatica and how to treat it?

WHAT IS SCIATICA?

Sciatica nerve is the longest and thickest nerve in the body, and consists of five smaller nerves that emerge from the lumbosacral spine and descend down the leg where they shrink into smaller nerves in the neck, knee, leaf, foot and fingers. As a result of the aging of the organism and degenerative changes on intercostal discs, lifting the load from an inconvenient body position, or performing an erroneous movement causes the discs to break and its central part starts moving out, which begins to press the corresponding spinal column (the place from which the nerves start). This disorder is called sciatica and it most commonly occurs in the lower part of the back (lumbar part of the spine). Sciatica in pregnancy is also a very common occurrence due to a large load of spinal column and affects future young mothers.

SCIATICA SYMPTOMS

Symptoms of sciatica when it comes to lower back pain and spine usually occur after severe strain and progressively spreads to the hip joint, and then down the lower leg and toes. Sciatica is accompanied by the feeling of "ants" in the legs, sometimes even a feeling of touch on the toes indicating that it is a damage to the disc between the fourth and fifth lumbar vertebrae. Achilles reflex is reduced or does not exist and this is the most reliable sign of sciatica. The pains increase with movements and strain (cough, or laughter), and stretching of the sciatica nerve (by raising the stretched leg) leads to intensification of their intensity. Pain in the back, often muscle spasms along the spinal column, is a defensive reaction to painful movements, the elasticity of this part of the spine is limited, especially of the back and muscle hypotonia may appear. Illness is characterized by the impossibility of stand on the fingers and heels and consequence is the weakness of the muscles in that area and feet which is why tingling sensation often occurs

TREATMENT OF SCIATICA

It is very important to treat sciatica, to determine the cause before starting any therapy, after which the way in which the disease will be treated is firmly determined. In an acute phase, urgent treatment is necessary because back pain is in most cases unbearable. As the most effective measure, the doctor prescribes the use of injections of analgesics and corticosteroids, after which the lumbar spine should be heated by a thermophore. It is also recommended to take muscle relaxants with a sedative effect, and often injections of vitamins B1, B6 and B are also given. In the acute phase, the most useful is the positioning in the back position with the vertebrae in the vertical or horizontal position, the so-called Williams position. When pain reduces physical therapy is applied in order to strengthen the muscles in the region. The patient should sleep on a flat bed, avoid lifting the load while standing up and special attention should be made not to make sudden movements, and carry out appropriate exercises for treatment. If situation becomes worse surgery is required.

EXERCISES FOR SCIATICA AND PREVENTION

Exercises that strengthen the muscles of the stomach, back and legs, with the proper keeping of the body and maintaining normal body weight are also the best prevention. They will reduce pressure on the lower part of the spine and protect it from damage. We recommend swimming, yoga, Pilates, running, aerobics that have an extremely effective effect on painful back. However, if the pain persists for a long time the patient should consult with a physician who will recommend certain physical activities.

EXERCISES FOR BACK STRECHING

The program, consists of a stretching exercises, and later for the strengthening of the abdominal and back muscles, and these exercises should begin as soon as the pain reduces in bed, and preferably combined with body massage. Especially recommended are exercises in the pool because water relieves the body. Of course, therapy and specific treatment for sciatica are determined for each patient separately, depending on the damage and a number of other factors such as the patient's form, intensity of pain, and the like.
