Medical diet experience

Medical diet until recently was only intended to heart patients, while today it is available to everyone who wants to solve the excess weight and want to lose weight in a healthy way. Medical diet for heart patients is designed by cardiologist Herman Tarnower for the needs of the patients. He wrote brochures and on them were advices for patients on how to reduce the risks of heart problems with the help of diet. In English speaking countries its name is Scarsdale diet.

We came across such names; medical diet in 15 days, medical diet with eggs, medical diet with oranges, hospital diet, etc.

The book, which was published later in 1978 had the title of "The Complete Scarsdale Medical Diet" and was extremely popular and sought after. It was sold in 11 million copies.


Scarsdale diet I fast low calorie diet with low carbohydrate intake- Recommended intake of calories in the first stage is from 650 to 1000 a day, with medical diet recommended is unique arrangement of food consisting of 43% protein, 34% carbohydrate and 22% of fat. Dr.Tarnover mentioned that medical diet is at the same time protein diet and low calorie diet which can cause ketosis which helps with weight loss because it burns the stored fat in the body.

Medical diet menu

Main guidelines are brittle meat, poultry, low-fat meat, vegetables, fruits and plenty of fluids. From spices exclusively herbal spices, then lemon juice, mustard, vinegar and ketchup. Allowed are 3 meals a day, between which you are not allowed to eat anything.
Medical diet recipes and menus for 5 days

Day 1
  • Breakfast: an orange, 4 salty crackers, a cup of unsweetened tea or coffee
  • Lunch: orange, boiled egg, half a cup of yogurt
  • Dinner: two tomatoes, two cooked eggs, half a lettuce or cucumber

Day 2
  • Breakfast: 1 orange, a cup of coffee without sugar or tea. 4 crackers
  • Lunch: boiled egg, half a cup of yogurt, orange
  • Dinner: 125 grams of minced meat-hamburger, tomatoes, oranges, 4 crackers, a cup of tea or coffee unsweetened

Day 3
  • Breakfast: an orange, 4 salty crackers, a cup of unsweetened tea or coffee
  • Lunch: 1 boiled egg, orange, 1/2 cup yogurt, 2 cucumber or lettuce, unsweetened drink
  • Dinner: steak of beef, 4 crackers, a cup of coffee or tea without sugar and orange.

Day 4
  • Breakfast: repeat as for the previous days
  • Lunch: 125g of the low-fat cheese, tomato and 4 crackers
  • Dinner: 125g of minced beef, 2 tomatoes, 4 crackers and apples.

Day 5
  • Breakfast: an orange, 4 salty crackers, a cup of unsweetened tea or coffee
  • Lunch: 200 grams of boiled fish or chicken, tomato, 4 crackers
  • Dinner: 500 grams of boiled vegetables, boiled egg, tomato

Medical diet experiences and notes
  • You can lose up to 10 kg per cycle
  • carbonated drinks and alcohol are strictly prohibited
  • The best burgers are made in stove
  • Do not skip meals and do not eat between them
  • Eat a prescribed amount of food.
  • Medical diet cannot be held longer than 15 days, the cycle repeats 3 x 5 days
  • be sure to exercise at least 30 minutes a day, practice hiking and recreation
  • if you have not achieved the desired weight after the first cycle, medical diet can be repeated after 7 days
  • it is mandatory to use effervescent tablets to make up for vitamins and minerals
  • After 8 p.m. do not eat anymore  
  • Before dieting be sure to consult a doctor

Medical diet results and risks

Frequent criticism of this diet goes to the number of calories that we consume. It is considered that for such a low caloric intake is not adapted to active adults, teenagers, pregnant women, the elderly and other. There are risks in other high-protein diets: Atkins diet, Dukan diet, etc. and they are usually the following: constipation, diarrhea, irritability, fatigue and the potential for gall stones to form. Kidney patients should especially be cautious. Since the Scarsdale diet was issued more than 30 years ago, some of the data is no longer so much current and that should be noted.

Medical diet for weight loss

It is considered to be feasible and not too expensive, many meat lovers will love how foods are available everywhere and do not require supplements to the diet.
