The colon is the part of the digestive tract that is long between 150 and 220 cm. Serious complication is colon cancer with liver metastases. Although medicine has not yet determined the exact cause of this type of cancer, specific risk factors are known. These are, above all, a number of genetic predispositions, and positive family history. The same applies to persons whose family recorded a Crohn's disease or inflammation of the colon.

The risk factors include unhealthy lifestyle, especially physical inactivity, being overweight, smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. People with diabetes are up to 40 percent more likely to have colon cancer than those who do not have diabetes. Women who beat ovarian, uterine or breast cancer are also more exposed to this type of cancer, as well as persons who have already had colorectal cancer (there is a possibility that the cancer will come back, especially if you were first diagnosed before the age of 60).
The first symptoms of colon cancer are occasionally missed

Early symptoms of colon cancer do not usually occur (it may take several years before they are in any way manifested and noticed), which is why people over 50 years of age are recommended regular screening for colon cancer. The so called FOB test reveals the blood in the stool which cannot be seen with naked eye.

The manifestation of specific symptoms, which are often not associated with colon cancer, comes in the later stages of the disease, and they differ depending on the location of the tumour. It can be a frequent diarrhoea, chronic constipation accompanied by imprisonment, blood in the stool, anaemia, a powerful pain or cramps. It can also be a significant weight loss, vomiting, and loss of appetite or feeling of constant fatigue, exhaustion.

A particular problem is the fact that the patients go see the doctor in advanced stages of the disease - when the cure is far more difficult. Cancer can occur in any part of the colon: usually it happens in the rectum (especially in men), and it is possible that malignancy occurs in the middle of the large intestine (mostly women), and at the junction with the small intestine. Persons older than 50 years are most susceptible to this type of cancer, although unfortunately colon cancer is more common in young people.


How to diagnosis colon cancer

Once you gain access to a complete medical history of the patient, the doctor may refer you to a range of specialists. Be sure to do blood tests to determine if there is any inflammation in the body and what is the situation with leukocytes and iron. It is certainly uneasy, but if you cooperate with a physician specialist - usually a gastroenterologist performing the inspection, there are no problems or pain. The colonoscopy is also a very reliable method for detecting polyps, haemorrhoids, anal fissures, etc.

Sigmoidoscopy, or rectal exam is the second method that can detect colon cancer. During colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy a part of bowel tissue may be taken, which is later sent for laboratory analysis.

Examination with barium contrast is also one of the methods that diagnose colon cancer. It is in fact an X-ray, during which the intestine has a mixture of barium and air. This method may be replaced by a modern CT colonography, which is similar to colonoscopy. If it turns out that the colon has ruptured, then magnetic resonance imaging is recommended, which determines the stage of disease.

Colon cancer prognosis and drug therapy

Colon cancer is completely curable if detected at an early stage and then the tumour is usually removed by surgery. Then the prognosis for cure is very good. However, if the bowel cancer spreads to regional lymph nodes, surgery is not sufficient by itself, but combined with chemotherapy, immunotherapy or radiotherapy. Of course there are certain side effects of this type of treatment.

Studies have shown that people with higher concentrations of vitamin D in the body are up to seventy percent less likely to develop colon cancer (it is enough to have a cup of skim milk a day to create a protective shield). Diet after surgery of the colon must be strictly supervised by a qualified person.

Apple is one of the most powerful allies in the fight against colon cancer. Chinese experts have singled out the polysaccharides from the fruit, and they are then broken down into oligosaccharides, which are used to treat cancer cells. It turned out that these compounds after 36 hours of operation are almost twice more effective than chemotherapy for colon cancer. Doctors and nutritionists recommend that you eat at least one apple a day to prevent the occurrence of cancer, and it is advisable to incorporate apple vinegar into your diet.
